Physical Therapy at Shenandoah University

Shenandoah University’s Division of Physical Therapy prepares students as doctorally educated physical therapists who are reflective, collaborative practitioners that provide evidence‐based, compassionate and ethical care for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of movement dysfunction across the global community.

The Physical Therapy Program at Shenandoah University is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

We accomplish this through an integrated, patient-centered curriculum with a low student/faculty ratio. Frequent patient care experience, community service by students and faculty and the integration of current technologies are key components of the PT education at Shenandoah University.

Admissions

Shenandoah University's entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy professional degree program prepares students for the challenges of the profession and provides an excellent foundation for further graduate study. Applications for SU's Doctor of Physical Therapy Program are made utilizing the Physical Therapy Centralized Application system. Please see the PTCAS website for information regarding applications and deadlines.

Applicants to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program must have demonstrated success in academics and have a strong background in the sciences. Completion of the bachelor's degree is required. A demonstration of well-developed problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills and commitment to service is necessary. Those applying to the Doctor of Physical Therapy program should be prepared to work closely with other students in the program, make contributions to the learning process of others and contribute to the enrichment of the curriculum and the profession.

Shenandoah University’s Post Professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (PP DPT) professional degree program prepares practicing physical therapists trained at a BS or MS PT degree level for advanced practice and teaching at the level of a doctoring professional.

Post Professional DPT scholarships are available for SUPT alumni, SUPT clinical instructors, employees of Valley Health Systems, Inova Health Systems, and West Virginia University Hospital- East.

Select courses in the TDPT program are also open to Visiting Students, who may not be ready to enroll in a degree program, or are seeking high-quality advanced continuing education.

Clinical Education

Clinical Education is an integral part in the curriculum of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Shenandoah University. Our students begin clinical practice in the first year in the second semester, and clinical practice opportunities continue through graduation. Students are mentored by some of the most accomplished clinicians in all practice areas of ambulatory and non-ambulatory care. SUPT has over 300 contracts and places our highly prepared students in local, regional, national and international settings. Graduates of the program are entry-level generalist clinicians, and are well prepared to assume the multifaceted and evolving role of the physical therapist. Students have opportunities to select clinical experiences in areas of interest such as pediatrics, sports medicine, neurology, acute care, orthopedics, and pelvic health.
